Championed by James Conlon, the Recovered Voices initiative ensures that the power of art triumphs over historical neglect and censorship. First up is a rare staging of Highway 1, USA by William Grant Still, a trailblazing artist hailed as “the Dean of African-American Composers.” Composed in the 1940s but unperformed for decades, the opera portrays a hardworking couple, determined to build a better life, who discover that their years of sacrifices have been misguided. The new production is staged by director Kaneza Schaal and production designer Christopher Myers, who made impressive 2022 LA Opera debuts with Omar. Mr. Conlon’s extensive discography and videography can be found on the Bridge, Capriccio, Decca, EMI, Erato, and Sony Classical labels.

To date, Conlon has conducted more than 500 international performances of Verdi’s repertoire. Conlon closes his LA Opera season honoring the 100th anniversary of Puccini’s death, conducting Turandot, Puccini’s final opera composed in 1924. Like many theaters, it usually includes a stage, an orchestra pit, audience seating, backstage facilities for costumes and building sets, as well as offices for the institution's administration. Construction, however, which began in 1959, posed a variety of problems, many resulting from the innovative nature of the design. The opening of the Opera House was originally planned for Australia Day (January 26) in 1963, but cost overruns and structural engineering difficulties in executing the design troubled the course of the work, which faced many delays. Amid continuing disagreements with the government authorities overseeing the project, Utzon resigned in 1966.

A British artist based in Los Angeles for many years, David Hockney (born 1937) is a distinguished designer, artist and author whose work has been seen at the world’s most prestigious venues. His distinctive style and use of color and light have graced an enormous range of art media since the 1960s, encompassing etchings, paintings, drawings, photographic collages and printing, as well as the creation of landmark theatrical designs for film, theater and opera. Conlon is deeply invested in the role of music in civic life and the human experience.
